Campervan Road Trip in France: Stunning Brittany, Popular Loire Valley

Welcome to the introduction to our Campervan Road Trip in France, 2025.

Below is the route we are planning on taking, and as we confirm them, I will add campsites, places of interest and attractions we may want to visit.

And by the way, all the images in this post are from our 2018 trip to France.

The Ferry Trip

Portsmouth to Caen – 8am to 3pm, which is a 7 hour crossing. No cabin, but we have reserved seats.

Day 1-3

We then drive to our first campsite, which is near Mont Saint Michel. Much more on this will follow after the visit, but for now, this is our first stop.

The guide online suggest we visit on a weekday, outside of the holiday season. So, of course, as our timescale dictates we are visiting on a Saturday, in the middle of August!

But, we have a campsite that is not too far away, and we can apparently cycle to it, so we will be taking our bikes on this trip.

Day 4 to 6

Caen to Carnac – We are going to explore this area for a few days, before heading south west, to a place called Carnac for 3 nights.

This is about a 200 km drive, and should take about 2.5 hours. Yes, I am talking in KM now, and not miles.

This is how the distances seem to be in France. This is a coastal spot, and there are plenty of things to see and do in the area.

We will now be pretty much half way though our Campervan Road Trip in France

Day 7

Carnac to Saumur (So-murrrrr)
After we have explored Carnac we head off to Saumur, which is in the heart of the Loire Valley. Our ultimate destination is Montsoreau, (Mon-so-ro”. The “o” sound is similar to the “o” in “go”) but we are stopping at Saumur on the way.

This is the biggest single drive in the whole trip, which is 350km, and almost 4 hours. Our campsite is on the banks of the river Loire, which runs though the Loire valley.

It was only €4 more for a riverside pitch, so we opted for this. Whether or not this will prove to be a good decision remains to be seen! I think from this campsite there are cycle paths along the river, and this may be all we do here, as we are only here for one night, and after a long drive.

Day 8 to 10

Montsoreau to Bracieux, (Brassio).

This will be another 3 night stop over. In this area there are plenty of Chateaux’s to visit, the most famous being Chateaux de Chambord.

Now, one thing I do want to say is, that we are doing this trip with Max, an 11 year old, and a lot of this may not sound too exciting, but, we are looking for campsites that will have pools, and water slides for example for him to enjoy.

We are also taking bikes, which means plenty of fun on the bikes too. So yes, we are trying to marry up the things to see and do, with fun things for Max.

Day 11

At this stage, we only have a couple of nights left, so, we are starting to head back north, towards Caen for our Ferry home in a couple of days.

We are driving though Le Mans, the home of the famous 24 hour race. There does seem to be some closures to the track and the museum around this time, so we are not exactly sure what we are going to see there, but we thought is was a good a place as any to break up the journey.

Day 12 and 13

After the one night stop over in Le Man, we are heading to a campsite right on the coast, about a 20 minute drive to the Port to catch our ferry back.
