When I am not out and about in the Campervan, and often when I am, I like to have a book in my hand, and Campervan Books, or something Travel-related is usually my book of choice. If I can’t be traveling, then it is nice to be transported somewhere vicariously. (updated December 2021).
I thought I would take a bit of time and list a few of our favourite books, plus ones that we have earmarked to be looked at in the future. There is a real mixture here. Fun stories, guides, and even a Campervan colouring book!
I thought others may find these useful, now, or when you are on the road! If you need some more resources, why not check out Tips for Hiring a Campervan, or perhaps the Best Reasons for a Campervan Holiday.
Campervan Books We Have Read or we look at Regularly
Book Title: Not Tonight, Josephine: A Road Trip Through Small-Town America
Author: George Mahood
Synopsis from Amazon:
Two Brits, George and Mark, set off from New York City to explore the back roads of America. In this calamity-ridden travel tale, George sets out in true clichéd fashion to discover the real America.
Throw in plenty of run-ins with the police, rapidly dwindling finances and Josephine – the worst…….
Why we like this: Campervan Books come in many guises, but I like to get lost in a story, as well as a ‘how-to’ or a ‘tour guide’. This book does just that, it takes you on a journey, albeit in someone else’s shoes.
Book Title: Campervan Colouring: Freedom Collection
Author: by Kludoman (Paperback)
Synopsis from Amazon:
Welcome to the world of Kludoman, where classic campervans rule, and all other rules are made to be broken.
This cool colouring book is full of Kludo’s quirky campervan illustrations to colour yourself calm as you dream of life on the open road.
Why we like this: Washing up is done, and we are settling down for the evening in the campervan. This book therapeutically passes the time, and offer a bit of relaxation before lights out. Max likes it too!
Book Title: The Camper Van Bible: Live, Eat, Sleep (Repeat)
Author: Martin Dorey
Synopsis from Amazon:
The Camper Van Bible is THE definitive glovebox bible for anyone who owns or ‘would die for a camper van. In this book, Martin Dorey, acknowledged camper van expert and presenter of BBC2 s ‘One Man and His Campervan’, delves headfirst into the nitty-gritty of camping and camper vans.
The book covers all aspects of the camper van life, including:……
Why we like this: As Campervan Books go, this is a good one. We read this as we were hiring, and then buying, a campervan! Tips when buying. Tips when camping, and also what to eat. It really is the Camper Van Bible.
Book Title: Take Risks: One Couple’s Journey to Quit Their Jobs and Hit the Open Road (We’re the Russos Book 1)
Author: Joe Russo
Synopsis from Amazon:
What if you could walk away from the pressures and stresses of corporate life, and live outside of the routines and restrictions? What if you could choose where you live on a daily basis, have a beach view on Monday and a view of the mountains on Friday? What if, instead of trading your days and weeks and years for a life deferred, you just went and lived that life right now?
These were the questions Joe and Kait Russo asked themselves as they faced endless corporate meetings, inconvenient business trips, and the crushing stress of ‘making it.’ It all changed when Kait asked Joe, “What if we sold our house and got an RV?”……
Why we like this: You make what at the time seems a ridiculous comment, but then, the ball starts rolling and you find yourself well on the way to living your dream. This is how it all began for the Russo’s
Book Title: Tales From the Open Road: The Adventures and Misadventures of RV Living (We’re the Russos Book 2)
Author: Joe Russo
Synopsis from Amazon:
Many people dream about a life of travel, but what is it really like living on the road full time? As a follow-up to his first book, Take Risks, Joe Russo’s Tales From the Open Road takes you along for the ride as he and his wife Kait turn their dream into reality and navigate their first year as full-time RVers.
The memoir offers a personal account of the mostly good and sometimes challenging adventures (and misadventures)…….
Why we like this: Following on from the above after they hit the road. This book shares the couples first journey, and how a year on the road turned into, well, many more!!
Book Title: Travels with Charlie
Author: John Steinbeck
Synopsis from Amazon:
He felt that he might have lost touch with its sights, sounds and the essence of the American people.
Moving through the woods and deserts, dirt tracks and highways to large cities and glorious wildernesses, Steinbeck observed – with remarkable honesty, insight and a humorous eye – the gamut of America and the people who inhabited it.
Why we like this: It is just an old, well written and with a unique view that probably only Steinbeck can put into words. Take your time reading it, as the descriptions, metaphors and sometimes history lessons can require concentration. But the ‘effort’ is well worth it. At the time of typing, I am 80% through the book.
Campervan Books I Want to Read
Book Title: The Rough Guide to the North Coast 500 (Compact Travel Guide)
Author: Rough Guides
Synopsis from Amazon:
Discover the North Coast 500 with this compact, entertaining, ‘tell it like it is’ Rough Guide, packed with invaluable practical guidance and honest expert recommendations across 86 information-packed pages.
Why we like this: If you have read my post on 5 UK Road Trips you need to take you will know that the North Coast 500 is top of the list. This book. This book looks like it would be a great asset before and during that trip. Perhaps not technical a campervan book, it looks like it should still offer a lot.
Book Title: Take the Slow Road: England and Wales
Author: Martin Dorey
Synopsis from Amazon:
Forget hurrying. Forget putting your foot down and racing through sweeping bends. Forget the understeer (whatever that is).
Forget the blur of a life lived too fast. This is a look at taking life slowly. It’s about taking the time to enjoy journeys and places for their own sake. It’s about stopping and putting the kettle on. Stopping to take a picture. Stopping to enjoy stopping. How are you going to do it? In a camper van or a motorhome, of course.
Why we like this: Martin Dorey has this, and two others in the series, for Scotland and Ireland. As we are in the South of England, it makes sense to start with England & Wales. Split into regions, then routes and attractions, it offers a lot about what to see and tips on seeing it from the road. This campervan book may prove useful over the coming months!
