Haytor Rocks in Dartmoor National Park, are Rocky Granite Tors that sit proudly, overlooking Dartmoor National Park.
You can find them on the southeastern side of Dartmoor.
We were camping nearby, and we like a walk, so when we saw this, we were sold.
If you make the hike to Haytor Rocks, you can enjoy the spectacular views across Dartmoor and the South Devon moors.
You can enjoy Dartmoor’s fascinating past and the stunning wildlife and heritage within a short walk of the National Park Visitor Centre.
The imposing granite rocks of Haytor are within a protected area, so please look after the countryside.

Getting There
A bit about Haytor Rocks
If you are into Tors, Haytor Rocks is apparently Dartmoor’s most famous Tor. We are not into them, so we only heard about it when hunting for a visitors centre. Even though the Centre was closed, there is an informative Notice board outside, with maps and places to see locally.
Even on a windy Friday there were a few people around, and the car park closest to the Visitors Centre was virtually full. Expect it to get a lot busy in the warm summer, school holiday months.
It is possible to climb to the top of the actual rocks, and although we climbed a bit, we didn’t go all the way. We also saw a couple of people having a go at rock climbing. Now, I don’t mind having a go at indoor rock climbing, but outdoor, in the wind, on real rocks! No thanks!!
There are 360° views from the top, so visiting on a clear day is definitely the better bet.
What’s nearby?
You are in Dartmoor National Park, so there are lots nearby. We visited the House of Marbles after we had finished here, which is great for kids and adults alike.
There are plenty of other Tors and Walks to discover, and of course, the Visitor Centre if it is open.
Dartmoor also has a decent selection of parks and waterfalls to visit.
Finally, to recommend a place we have been, although a little further afield, check out the Granite Way cycle path. A blog will follow on this, as we have cycled it, and loved it!
About Our Visit to Haytor Rocks in Dartmoor
Haytor Rocks are granite rocks that sit atop a hill within easy reach of the Visitor Centre. Once you have crossed the road, it should take no more than 15 minutes to climb to the top.
The walk itself is a little steep, but only feels that way if you are unfit like me! 🙂
We experienced strong winds at the top, but it was well worth the walk. The views across Dartmoor National Park were worth the walk, so don’t forget your camera.
You can also take along you rock climbing gear. Of course, we didn’t!

It was a good, energising walk, and definitely one we would recommend.
