In brief, we would recommend this site to campers. As our accommodation is always our Campervan, we cannot review the lodges or holiday homes this site may offer, so this is purely from a Camping perspective. Decent size pitches, friendly staff, and plenty to do if you fancy some time away from the campervan.

Review of Highlands End Holiday Park – About Our Stay

This was a February visit, so it wasn’t jammed packed, but there were still a good deal of pitches being used. Sat Nav took us to the gate.

Location

Highlands End Holiday Park is located in Dorset, right on the South Coast, just West of a coastal town called West Bay. There are other Campsites in Dorset that may interest you too.

If you are as enchanted by the sea when you are camping like we are, then this is the place for you. To get to the beach you don’t even have to unplug your electric! As long as you are as fit as us (which isn’t very fit at all) then you just follow the coastal paths down, and with 10 or 15 minutes, you are on the beach.

Customer Service / Staff

Our review of Highlands End Holiday Park, and any park, always includes the Staff. Booking was easy, done over the phone with email confirmation being sent quickly. We did ask if we could be allocated a pitch, but they made it clear pitches are allocated on arrival. In hindsight, this was a good thing, as the pitch we may have chosen would not have been suitable due to the weather. So we would have had to move anyway.

Reception staff were polite and professional on arrival. The person manning the pool was helpful and chirpy, even keeping our recently purchased milk etc in his fridge while we went for a swim. The bar staff were courteous enough, although no one went out of their way here to be overly polite, they just went about their jobs and were certainly helpful enough with food choices etc.

Score – 8 / 10

Showers and Toilets

Photograph of the toilets for our Review of Highlands End Holiday Park
Inside the gents Shower Block

Every review we do highlights massively on the Showers and Toilets. This review of Highlands End Holiday Park is no different.

Most of the Campervan pitches are relatively close to one of the two shower blocks. Great for that last trip of the day to the loo, or that middle of the night dash if caught short!

Each shower cubicle was really quite big, and divided into two parts. A part for the shower, and another part for the changing area. A big plus for us here for two reasons. Number one, there was a small wall dividing the parts, so your cloths and belongings stayed dry. Number two, there was a small bench in the changing area. Very handy. A ‘luxury’ not always offered at all campsites.

The shower on my first day there was warm, but weak. The second day was much better. Perhaps I was unlucky on day one. There were 4 cubicles in the mens block, and 6 in the ladies (we think). Remember those old school showers? The ones you had to press, then get wet for about 20 seconds, then fumble around to press it again while you have soap in your eyes?

Not here. Proper taps and everything. Turn on. Hot water. Turn off.

They were well heated, clean, and close to most of the pitches. They had hair dryers which were free, again, not always the case. The one downside was there were only 2 in the ladies and there didn’t seem to be any plugs for those people (and we have seen them) that want to bring their own hairdryers.

All in all, until it becomes the norm to include a free massage, you couldn’t really ask for more.

Cleanliness

Really no cause for concern here. Everything was cleaned well, although both mornings I went to the shower block and they had signs saying Closed for Cleaning. This was at a time you would expect there to be a lot of people in and out having showers, so seemed like an odd time. I snuck in anyway, and had no problems.

The pool was also clean, as you would expect.

Facilities

This is where our review of Highlands End Holiday Park really gets the thumbs up. A pretty decent shop. A bar serving food, and with a selection of games you can pick off the shelf for those cold winter nights when all you need is a good drink and a game of something. A children’s outdoor play area. Coming in Spring 2018, a great looking indoor soft play area. Perfect for those who want to camp all year round.

The pool was decent enough, but more like a spa type pool, than a kiddies play pool. I think there are only a couple of (really really REALLY) minor things that stop this from being a full on 10 out of 10.

  1. You had to pay to use the pool, and it wasn’t much so as I type this I feel I am being a bit unfair. But usually when you pay to stay at a Holiday Park, or a hotel, or a resort, you get to use all the facilities. Perhaps the pitch prices were reduced and I understand the argument that some people may not want to swim, so why should they pay for it. But at the same time, some people won’t use the play park. Or even use the shower block, etc.
  2. The pitches were a long way from the hub of everything. Event the closest pitches were a good 8 minute walk back to the reception / bar / leisure centre area. But, on the plus because of this, you got the great views and the ease of the walk down to the beach

Score 9 / 10
