The Rodwell Trail is a 3.5k path built on a disused railway line. The path runs between Weymouth and Chesil Beach / Isle of Portland, home to the Portland Lighthouse.
This path is extremely popular for walkers and cyclist, and we have done it a couple of times. Here is all you need to know about the Trail.

Location
Here is a map of the Trail, and where it runs. It is easy to find the start, and I suggest starting from the Chesil Beach / Portland end as there is more parking.
There is a particularly big car park near the beach, that even on a May Day Bank Holiday had plenty of space. I think this would be easier than parking in Weymouth.
The Start
Once you have parked and paid at one of the Car Park on Chesil Beach, it is just a short walk back up to Ferry Bridge. At the time of typing in 2021, there is a pub near a set of pedestrian lights. The Rodwell trail is on the other side of the road.
The Rodwell Trail Itself
The trail is on a nice, smooth tarmac path, and can cater for walkers, cyclist and buggies / wheelchairs.
If you are walking from Portland / Chesil end to Weymouth, the sea is on your right.
There are plenty of stop offs for Photo ops.
You go past a couple of old station platforms, along with Sandsfoot castle. The castle has great views out to Portland and the harbour. Unfortunately, the small castle itself was closed, due to falling masonry, so we couldn’t go inside.
Visit Dorset website says the trail is great for wildlife with many birds, plants, butterflies and other insects recorded along the route.
Tunnels and Train Stations
As mentioned, you do get to fly past some of the old Train Stations as you venture along the Rodwell Trail. There is also a tunnel that you head through. This came in handy on one trip when we were caught in a sudden rainstorm.
Summary of the Rodwell Trail
The Rodwell Trail is a perfect walk or bike ride if you want a surface that is easy for all levels of fitness, with plenty to see or do along the way.
It is not far before you get to Weymouth, and the views and sights along the way are worth the trip. What do you think, would you give the Rodwell Trail a go. Let me know in the comments!!
